Requirements Title: Athletic Trainer and Strength & Conditioning Services at U.S. Coast Guard Academy
Description: The United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA), located in New London, Connecticut, supports a robust NCAA Division III athletic program that includes 25 varsity sports and four chartered club teams, engaging over 600 student-athletes. The Academy competes in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), emphasizing both athletic excellence and academic achievement. Athletics is a co-curricular activity playing a vital role in the development of cadets, contributing to their physical readiness, leadership skills, and overall character development. To support its Health and Physical Education (HPE) curriculum, varsity teams, and club sports, the USCGA requires contractor support in the form of certified athletic trainers and strength and conditioning coaches. These professionals are essential to ensuring the health, safety, and performance of cadet-athletes across all levels of competition and training. Athletic trainers will provide a comprehensive range of services, including injury prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and return-to-play protocols. Their responsibilities include conducting diagnostic evaluations, delivering therapeutic treatments, and implementing injury mitigation strategies. They are also responsible for referring cadets to primary care providers when necessary and ensuring that all medical follow-ups are completed. The primary goal of the athletic trainers is to restore cadets to their pre-injury condition as efficiently and safely as possible. Strength and conditioning coaches will focus on enhancing the physical performance of cadets through structured training programs. These coaches will develop, implement, and manage exercise regimens tailored to the specific needs of cadet-athletes, ensuring adherence to safety standards and best practices in exercise physiology. Their work supports cadets in improving their athletic performance, preparing for competitions, and excelling in the Physical Fitness Exam (PFE), a key component of cadet life and evaluation at the Academy. Both roles are integral to the success of the Academy’s athletic and physical education programs. They contribute not only to the physical well-being of cadets but also to their overall development as future officers. By maintaining high standards of care and performance training, these professionals help ensure that cadets are physically prepared to meet the demands of Coast Guard service. In summary, the USCGA seeks to enhance its athletic and physical education programs through the support of skilled athletic trainers and strength and conditioning coaches. These roles are critical in fostering a safe, effective, and high-performing environment for cadet-athletes, aligning with the Academy’s mission to develop leaders of character for the United States Coast Guard.
